Android 17 Unveiled: Complete Redesign with Spatial Interface

Google has officially previewed Android 17 at this year's developer conference, showcasing a radical departure from the traditional flat UI. The new design language, dubbed 'Material Spatial', introduces depth, dynamic lighting, and layered interfaces that adapt depending on how the user holds the device.

Built for Foldables and XR

The redesign is heavily optimized for the growing market of foldable phones and upcoming Extended Reality (XR) glasses. Elements on the screen now have a sense of z-axis depth; as you tilt your phone, widgets subtly shift to reveal underlying information.

Furthermore, Android 17 introduces 'Seamless Handoff', allowing users to effortlessly transfer their current app state from their smartphone directly to an Android-powered smart display, tablet, or XR headset by simply looking at the target device. Beta testing begins next month for Pixel devices.
